The drive to Faraway was as nerve-wracking as it was filled with almost to just breaking the law moments.
Emiko had finally arrived in the small town after almost crashing her car. The paramedics and police were already around and in her old house. She ran up to them, but she heard from the officer exactly what she feared to hear.
Sunny, her baby, her shut-in suffering child who she heard was finally getting outside again, was dead on arrival.
The cause was suicide.
She wanted to scream. To tear out her hair. To punch her ex-husband. To force the god of this world to answer her what she did to deserve to outlive both her children… But she couldn’t. Her throat tight, choking on her own tears, she simply stumbled away from the scene.
Crumbling into the pavement, half leaning on a fence, Emiko felt a part of herself die.
She heard footsteps.
¨Ms Suzuki?¨
It was the brokenness of the voice that let her look up to Hero. Behind Hero were Kel, Aubrey, and his parents. The children looked utterly miserable and terrified. She couldn’t blame them.
¨He’s dead, my baby is dead, he couldn’t take it anymore. I… I failed him¨ Emiko couldn’t help the words from leaving her mouth.
Emiko heard Hero and Kel’s parents gasp, Kel collapsed to the pavement while Aubrey ran back to the Rodrigez’s house. Hero looked like he was ready to throw up. Mrs Rodrigez was leading her children to their house while Mr Rodrigez helped her stand up.
¨I’m sorry¨ Mayu choked out ¨It was stupid, I can’t…¨
¨It’s not your fault. Losing both your children I mean. It can’t be easy¨ Mr Rodrigez said, rubbing circles in her back. Oh how she wanted to prove him wrong. Mr Rodrigez continued ¨It isn’t easy either for them, Basil also died by suicide yesterday while they visited him.¨
Emiko’s blood ran cold.
Basil too?
She didn’t pay attention to Basil (or Sunny’s other friends for that matter) after Mari’s death. A part of her hated him, for what he did. What he exactly did? She didn’t know. But he looked so guilty that night that Sunny hanged Mari. He had to have done something.
And now he was dead
Was it her fault? Should she have reached out to him like she tried to help her baby? Would it even help, knowing how her child was dead?
She pulled away from Mr Rodrigez.
¨I, I have to go¨
She ran back to the car, shut the door, and screamed.
