Trying Out RolePlaying

So I've been roleplaying recently (in a D&D group and one-on-one with a diffrent person), and I wanted to talk a lil about it.

To me, at least, it feels like writing something on your own but more exciting. Writing something on your own gives you more control over the product, which, in some cases is just better. But also, sometimes you just wanna have fun, and roleplaying is an odd but intressting way to do so. I think a part of why I'm enjoying it is cause I'm able to bounce off ideas with somebody else, which helps my creativity a bunch.

I agree.

That's one of the things I enjoy about it. I've described it as improv acting -- you get a character and a setting, and you have to provide the action and dialog.

The randomness in RPGs (dice rolls etc) I think really provide something that's not provided in other entertainment media, which is that no one necessarily knows how the story is going to turn out before it's over. In an old game of Warhammer Fantasy, an NPC critically failed a stealth roll and it completely changed the rest of the plot because the PCs captured and interrogated him and thus learned way more about what was going on then they otherwise would have at that point. I definitely did not plan for that to happen and it made for a much different story, but just as interesting, story as I had originally intended.
