[yes I'm calling it a let's play, it's technically that]
So, since I am getting that I'm meandering a bit in Sword & Shield, I’ve decided to replay Pokémon Sword (despite not having technically finished it in the first place…). I’m doing this partially to get a better grip on the story & make a good-enough novelization AU in the future.
So here’s my documentation (part 1) of Pokémon Sword:
(no pictures, at least for now, cause IDK if I even have a USB cable & it seems like a hassle)
So I choose to go the girl protag and choose the appearance used in promo material + the canon name.
Things I would like to note before we even actually start the story:
- Gloria’s family has a Munchlax
- her mum likes comedy-dramas
- Gloria seemingly likes looking adult-ish (yes, entirely based on her reaction to her desk. I think it fits with a 13 yo anyway~)
- The bag she has is her mum’s old bag
- Gloria’s mum insisted on having a High-Tech Microwave™
- The fridge is specifically stated to have “food that the family likes”. Either the family is a bit indulgent with their grocery shopping. Or, for my indulgence, they’re all autistic & have same-foods.
As we exit the house we see it’s a short one, with the attic seemingly acting as 2nd floor (we can’t enter the door upstairs sadly). But the family seems well off enough since Gloria has a switch + Telly in her own room. Hop (our neighbor) comments how heavy our bag looks, and yea it’s big, but so far there is seemingly nothing in it??? Does Gloria just bring a lot of stuff always? (that would be a fun quirk).
Postwick (our town) says by the board that it's been a farming town since old, something you can see even on the outside because of lots of visible farmland. (also Gloria seems to like to fiddle with her hair when doing nothing). Hop’s house is immediately shown to be bigger than ours, both in size of building & square footing (it even has a shed + battlefield!), fitting for the family of the champion.
In Hop’s house, we learn that Gloria is Hop’s reliable friend (as told by his mum if you talk to her after Hop leaves to get Leon, his brother, from the train station cause he sucks with directions). Also the family seems richer by their Higher-tech looking kitchen (also they have a Purrlion). There are medals & such in the living room with a guy I can presume is Hop & Leon’s grandpa saying that “to Hop, Leon’s a superhero” (also they have books about the champion, their own eldest son? why?).
In Hop’s room upstairs, we see;
- that Charizard, Machamp & Gengar are apparently Galar’s most popular Pokémon
- Hop’s bed is very wrinkled
- it’s messy
There’s also a woman upstairs, saying Leon doesn’t come home often, but she still keeps his room clean (clearly his grandma). Also, in Leon’s room;
- he has a RIDICULOUS amount of caps, not hats in general, just caps
- he has a well used training equipment (that his Pokémon may also use)
- he has a lot of “hard to understand books, mostly just for adults”
Getting out of Hop’s house, the grill is well used & Hop is not far from the road. Hop warns us not to go into tall grass (which he is allowed to do because he already has a Wooloo) cause Pokémon dangerous™. Also the train station is like, 10 meters away from Hop’s & Gloria’s houses, how awful is Leon with directions if he already would get lost??? (also there’s already a crowd)
Leon is here! Also he dresses like a child’s action figure XD (I adore this actually (also convenient wind is convenient)). Leon seems like a nice guy (non-ironically) but also seems to have an ego? Like he calls himself the “greatest champion of Galar”, lmao sorry dude imma have fun beating you. It makes me wonder how long Gloria has been in Postwick if neither she or Leon have actually met eachother before (but also aww, Hop talks about her to Leon!).
Our starter Pokémon does not come from a professor, but from Leon as a gift to both Gloria & Hop. I really like the intro with the starters, it shows the energy that the starters have while giving Quick Tip on which is weak to which. (also Gloria seemingly has a bit of a doe-eyes expression, like in general).
I picked Sobble, cause Sobble cute + it gives Hop Scorbunny which I think is fitting (sorry Grookey…). I named Sobble Dew. Also the mums come afterwords and say “trainer nonsense”, (I love these women already) and they have a barbeque.
We have our first battle with Hop the next day (after Leon is condescending, but in a way I would expect from a guy giving children superpowered animals & not wanting them to be stupid). Apparently Hop thinks we wouldn’t know about type advantages? Did he never talk about them to Gloria? We got 400 Poké-money (Pokén? yknow like yen?) which since the money is based yen is like, 4 bucks.
We are assigned rival by Hop tentatively & Leon by just asking us to. Hop wants to do the gym challenge (which in this game/region, you need to be endorsed to). Leon says to Hop (& Gloria, despite her showing fuck all intention to so) to wait till they have PokéDexes. Hop immediately wants to go to the research labs to get them. & now we’re doing this seemingly big ass thing because the brothers said to, lol.
We go out to ask Gloria’s mum, but the Wooloo who earlier tried to break the gate next to Gloria’s house has broken it. Apparently nobody is supposed to go into the forest for Reasons™. Hop asks if we should follow & I make Gloria say yes, we should try and save it. We go into the forest and the fog is thick as hell, with neither Gloria or Hop able to see the lost Wooloo.
We fight 2 Skwovets & a Rookidee with Hop there to heal us. The end of our path has us come across the box legendary. The cry is actually pretty haunting & music spooky-ish. We try to fight the dog but no moves effect it + it keeps making fog to keep Gloria & Hop from seeing anything.
We are just, placed somewhere else. Leon is there, chastising us but telling us good job? I guess? (IDK what to make of Leon’s dialogue here TBH). Wooloo & we are safe, Hop tells Leon about the Weirdo Mon. (also Hop keeps talking about his legend, like he’s the protag who’s self-aware (sorry Hop, but nope!)). We come home and while Gloria’s mum is offended that she heard it from Leon & not us, she’s seemingly very chill about Gloria just, doing the gyms, despite them apparently being a big deal.
We meet Hop again at Route 1 and while we’re forced to go through the tall grass cause Wooloo line, we make it out without fighting any Pokémon. Again, Leon is seemingly ACTUALLY hopeless with directions cause he apparently got lost to the research lab, which is basically a street away (also Charizard makes him be less hopeless at it).
We enter the lab, which looks more like a library than I think a lab looks. We meet the cutie mon Yamper & Sonia is on the railing above and asks if Leon has unreasonable request like “a new superpowered Pokémon” (but in a way that seems they’re buddies & this isn’t meant to be antagonistic). Leon says hi to Yamper before introducing Sonia as its trainer (btw Yamper & Sonia also help him not be as hopeless).
“What can I say about Sonia? Well, I like the way she cooks” LEON! Is that any way to introduce your childhood rival??? XD. Sonia gives a proper introduction to herself as the professor’s assistant. Leon then introduces us before telling Sonia to put us on the right path. Sonia is annoyed. She then says hi to the Rotom living in our phone & asks us if we know a lot about Pokémon. I make Gloria say not really to make sense with what Hop said earlier. Sonia then puts the PokéDex on the Rotom-phone. She says it’s a gift from her grandma & asks us to tell her about it on Route 2.
We talk to Sonia again who says that Leon’s an amazing champion. But she’s restless from being just an assistant, and not even an official one at that. A random guy gives us a potion as we leave, Hop introduces us to the Pokemon Center and then he leaves for Route 2. We look around a bit, grab 2 other items, and spend Hop’s money on Oran berries. We see Hop again before Route 2 who then explains the gym challenge thing. We enter a random house with a random old guy telling us about Sonia & Leon's old healthy rivalry before stopping after “but”.
We finally enter Route 2, Hop tells us we (Hop included) should fill in our roster before Leon appears out of nowhere. Leon tells us he will show us how to catch Pokémon while Hop wonders where he came from. Leon then catches a Wooloo in very dramatic fashion. He gives us 20 Pokéballs before leaving, Hop does then too.
