[Notes: Yume Nikki ˣ OMORI crossover short story. Madotsuki & Sunny interaction. Planned to be part of a larger series of short stories]
Despite things having gone well so far; Madotsuki was still dreading the rest of the day like usual.
Things were going relatively well this week, she hadn’t even skipped a day yet! It was the second month of school and Madotsuki was already wondering if she could just, stop going. She knew it wouldn’t happen (not without her dad becoming a kicked dog), but she still could dream.
A teacher had called in sick last minute (in the middle of the school-day instead of near the end sadly). Giving her half an hour to sit in the mostly abandoned lunch area. The others of her math class were either; fucking around outdoors or had just sneaked off school grounds altogether. Madotsuki grabbed her sketchbook and her pencils and started drawing the water bottle in front of her. It would’ve been fun had it been the street cats near her apartment. But she needed her drawn objects to not look like halfhearted garbage, so water bottle it is. Madotsuki had gotten her these pencils from her dad for school, not realizing that they were all brown instead of grey. But her teachers that day were either too chill or tired to care. And they made decent drawing utensils so she didn’t care. She had been trying to figure out how to draw the water when a piece of paper was placed near the bottle.
Madotsuki looked up to see a boy roughly her age was looking at her. She recognized him from biology. Sunny, if she remembered correctly. Apparently he never spoke and had been held back a year. Which with the fact he was new to the area and eyepatch made him a bit of a mystery at the start. But people here seemed to have gotten bored of it by now, since she hadn’t heard a rumor about him for a while. He tapped the note after she kept looking at him and she actually looked at it.
‘Can I sit here? I wanna draw too.’
Madotsuki was, perplexed. Nothing was stopping him from sitting next to her, so fuck if she knew why he asked. He shouldn’t be causing too much trouble hopefully, if he was only drawing. Madotsuki raised an eyebrow, but gestured at the seat across from her “I mean, space is free.”
Sunny(?) sat on the empty chair and grabbed his own sketchbook and wow, that was a lot of stickers. She didn’t recognize most of the characters on it, but there were a couple cute cartoon kitty ones in there. She couldn’t see anything beneath the cartoonish (heh) amount of stickers on it. Her own already had a space inspired cover (a gift from her dad) so she didn’t want to ruin it.
The just drawing afterwards shouldn't have been as nerve wracking as it was. But it was hard not to panic a little when he kept looking at her. She could FEEL his eyes on her. Was he drawing her? If so, how stupid did it look? It’s been a while so it could be pretty detailed by now. Madotsuki couldn’t really focus on making the bottles on her pages look like bottles when this guy could be drawing her as some ugly doodles or something.
‘Come on Tsuki!’ her mind tried ‘he asked if he could draw too, it’s probably just bottles like you’
‘But what if that was just so I *think* that’ she thought to herself. She already started chewing on her pencil. She saw eyepatch-boy place another piece of paper near her, so Madotsuki placed her pencil down and looked at it.
‘You need to be somewhere quiet?’ it said, and she felt funny about it. If it were up to her she’d still be in her room trying to beat Pokémon Crystal. But no, she had to care about her dad not taking care of her till he died. Madotsuki decided on something that would just rip the bandaid off.
“Can I see what you’re drawing?”
He looked at her, grabbed his sketchbook, and handed it to her. Madotsuki placed it gently in front of her and. It was just some doodles of animals. She knew she shouldn’t have been as weirded out by it as she was. But she was and he wasn’t trying to make fun of her and wow wasn’t she judgemental. The doodles were kinda cute even in greyscale. It was mostly pet-type animals but like, the cats were blob-esc. She didn’t realize she was so focused till she felt it drop when he tapped the book. He then pointed at her sketchbook, partially buried under his own.
She, really didn’t want him looking at her ugly-ass art. But Madotsuki figured it’d be weird not to show him as well. So she shoved it to him and kept looking at his face when he started to flip through. Madotsuki was so glad at that moment that she got a new sketchbook for school specifically. Because wouldn’t it be even more awkward if he was looking at her vent art? He handed her book back and gave a thumbs up. She wanted to scoff and tell him he didn’t need to be nice about it, since even she would tell others it’s flaws. But it would probably come off as rude and this guy had done nothing to her so far. So she just took the compliment. The bell rang and they both turned to the clock.
Welp, time to go to class again.
“Well” she started as they both cleaned up after themselves “have a nice day, Sunny?”. He just nodded as he walked off to a different direction to where she was supposed to be going. Madotsuki still had her nerves still a bit fried up but only as much as it had been all day, so today could’ve been worse.
===========================================
School, so far, had been treating Sunny alright.
He had to get used again to school and while he never did like school, or even now, it was nice to do something different with the hours in the day. Lethargy felt less terrible lately and mom had been happier with his changed behavior, so he pushed through the brain fog. Still, it was nice to have a free period, even if it was last minute.
He entered the lunch area when he saw her. Sunny wasn’t very familiar with the girl outside the fact they had biology together. But he heard from others that she, apparently called Miki, wasn’t very social and it wasn’t odd for her to skip half the week. She seemed to be drawing the water bottle in front of her, occasionally rubbing her eye bags. It was familiar, it was how he had been acting on bad days, when he just didn’t have it in him to be social. Sunny didn’t want to disturb her, but the way she looked now didn’t sit well with him. So he grabbed his chatting notebook, aka some notebook he just used to talk, and started writing.
Putting his request to sit there near her, she jolted out of her trance before looking at him. Sunny just tapped the note again when he didn’t get a response.
Miki(?) eyed the seat across from her before gesturing to it “I mean, space is free”.
Sunny took the space she gestured at and after grabbing his sketchbook started drawing. Despite genuinely being in the mood to draw things (he was planning on a bigger piece later and wanted to practice animals other than blob cats), he could feel her nerves make the air thick. Looking at the girl across from him occasionally, she looked like she was expecting something bad to happen. Maybe she had a bad day? He hoped his assumption was born more so on projection than truth cause that’d suck. But it shouldn’t hurt to ask.
Writing down ‘You need to be somewhere quiet?’, Sunny then placed the note next to her. The girl let out a breath, seemingly trying to calm down, and looked at him “Can I see what you’re drawing?”
Confused by her answer (question? both) but not knowing how else to respond, he just handed her his sketchbook. She started flipping through the pages, and looked, relieved? He wasn’t sure what she was expecting, but better than the air from earlier. Sunny then looked at hers, a smaller sketchbook with some nice stars on it. He couldn't help but be curious about how her art looked. So he tapped his book and pointed to her own.
The other across from him handed him her book. The first thing he saw was a drawing of the water bottle in brown. The lighting was a bit wonky, but he didn’t know how lighting worked with water either. It looked better than his attempts anyway. Flipping through he mostly saw sketches of other objects and a bunch of cats, which looked pretty good actually. He felt especially impressed by the horse on one page. Sure it also looked wonky like most of the objects, but at least the legs didn’t look broken in several places like in his own. Sunny handed her sketchbook back to her and gave a thumbs up, she just nodded.
Then the bell rang. Okay, class time he guesses, really wished his lunch period was now. They were half way cleaning up after themselves when Miki(?) spoke “Well, have a nice day, Sunny?” Figuring that writing her another note would be both awkward and slow them down, he just nodded and walked off to his next class.
To be honest, the girl felt like she was a bundle of nerves, he wondered if she skipped so much because of it. Whatever the reason, she wasn’t as intimidating as others described her as. He wished he had given her his name, but it could’ve been worse.
